Astley Colliery Pit: More celebrated aspect
Here you can find a weekly blog on the pre-industrial revolution past of Astley, Tyldesley, Atherton, Leigh and the surrounding areas. I have decided to start this page due to the lack of celebration of this areas pre-industrial revolutionary past and knowledge that has filtered through about it. Lancashire was one of the fundamental regions for the industrial revolution, with cotton mills, coal mines, docks, rail and canal infrastructure reaching here before many regions of the United Kingdom. As a result, the landscape and focus of the area shifted from that of a small-scale rural community to large-scale industrialisation. The focus of historical interest has therefore been placed in the industrial period, sidelining the most archaic history of the area. I plan to write seven of these weekly blogs which highlight a specific building, area or event in the region's past to present. (Depending on the reception I may do more/take requests)

About Me

I am local to the area (bred in Astley) and have been fascinated by history since an early age. This interest led me to undergraduate and then masters degrees in Archaeology (both at the University of Liverpool) and then a career in professional archaeology. Although my area of research is Ancient Greece, I have a keen interest in exploring this region's past and hope to spread a bit of knowledge and interest some people in its fascinating and neglected story.
